    Adresse:
89 Merri St, Warrnambool VIC 3280, Australia .

"At the end of The Great Ocean Road, just beyond the 12 Apostles, the picturesque seaside city of Warrnambool is home to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village.

Here lie the stories of hundreds of ships, their crewmen and passengers whose lives were claimed by the Shipwrecked Coast in the 19th Century. Stories passed on by the lucky few who survived the journey to start a new life in a foreign land, vowing never to set foot on a ship again.

Without the modern day comforts we take for granted today, their lives were challenging and tough as they relied on the ocean for resources and communication. Flagstaff Hill is a place to remember and experience the stories of these early battlers who laid the foundations for life as we know it today.

Don’t just learn about history – experience it
in our Living Museum and Spectacular Sound and Light Shows." - Flagstaff Hill.

  • Thunder Point

    Adresse:
    Warrnambool VIC 3280, Australia .

"Thunder Point is probably the best place in Warrnambool to watch the sunset.

Located just off MacDonald Street, this is the place to enjoy some of the best coastal views in the area.

The carpark faces the ocean, so if the weather is chilly you can still enjoy the vista without leaving your car, though the best views are had on the viewing platform.

At the far end of the carpark is a trail which leads to Shelly and Levys Beaches with their myriad rockpools, rocky outcrops and sandy beaches laced with glistening crushed shells.

It’s about a one kilometre walk from the Thunder Point carpark with a few hills and sometimes uneven terrain, so is not suitable for anyone with limited mobility.

Much like Childers Cove, these beaches attract far fewer visitors than their beauty deserves, and that forms part of their appeal." - Warrnambool City Council.

  • The Warrnambool Art Gallery

    Adresse:
26 Liebig St, Warrnambool VIC 3280, Australia .

"With more than 5,000 artworks ranging from European Salon and Colonial Paintings of the 1800s and Indigenous artefacts, to the Melbourne Modernists of the 1940s and an expanding catalogue of contemporary works, the Warrnambool Art Gallery has facilitated rich experiences for audiences, both through its Collection and through an inspired program of exhibitions and events in and beyond the Gallery.

The Warrnambool Art Gallery began in 1886 when retired police officer Joseph Archibald opened its doors in a building behind the mechanics institute in Liebig street. The Gallery began with an eclectic mix of artworks and museum curios.

Before long Archibald mobilised public support and paid for a new gallery annex. Loans and grants allowed the Gallery collection to grow with significant early acquisitions by French, German, and Belgian artists, which were less expensive than British works.

These were followed by the Louis Buvelot’s pastoral landscape Sunset Waterpool at Coleraine (1874). Buvelot found his artistic theme in light and tone and it is not surprisingthat he favoured the Western District during his sketching tours of Victoria. This reverence for light and tone can be seen in local contemporary painters including Kathryn Ryan who captures moody rows of trees in hazy paddocks.

The Gallery also holds a series of early tonalist paintings by Australian artists including Clarice Beckett, Archie Colquhoun, Percy Leason, Max Meldrum and Roland Wakelin.

Despite its enthusiastic start the economic downturn of the 1890s brought the Collection to a halt. In 1910 the Council took control of the Mechanics Institute and ran the Gallery there until 1963 when the building was allocated for municipal offices.

The Collection was dispersed on loan to galleries in Shepparton and Hamilton and not reunited until 1971.  In 1986 the Gallery’s Centenary year, a permanent home was built next to the ‘Civic Green’ and named in memory of one its champions Sir Fletcher Jones O.B.E." - The Warrnambool Art Gallery.

  • Warrnambool Botanic Gardens

    Adresse:
24 Bromfield St, Warrnambool VIC 3280, Australia .

"Warrnambool Botanic Gardens are a timeless and tranquil setting for weddings, picnics, peaceful walks and the many guided tours and special events hosted throughout the year.

Set on 20 acres of lush parkland just a short walk north of Warrnambool’s CBD, the gardens feature hundreds of native and exotic trees, ferns, flowers and other plant species.

Warrnambool Botanic Gardens are also home to a significant collection of historic structures, including an original sandstone shed once used by the garden’s first curator Charles Scoborio, now the headquarters of the Friends of the Gardens.

Other highlights include the naval cannon – one of 15 used to defend Victoria’s coastline in the 1800s, a band rotunda, ornamental lake and stone bridge.

The gardens were designed in 1877 by Melbourne Royal Botanic Gardens director William R Guilfoyle.

At that time, the area was heavily timbered with a dense undergrowth of scrub, ferns and tussock grass.

Guilfoyle’s plans saw the land transformed into impressive gardens of his classic style - wide curving paths, large sweeping lawns dotted with specimen trees, glimpses of water, dense shrubberies displaying a rich variety of plants and focal points composed of plants of dramatic form and colour such as Doryanthes, Palms and Bamboos.

By the end of the century additional attractions had been included: a fountain with gold and silver fish, a fernery, rockeries, several aviaries and a number of animals such as monkeys, kangaroos, wallabies and guinea pigs.

The aviaries of birds and the collection of animals have long since disappeared, but the restored fountain and fernery continues to delight.

A trip to Warrnambool is not complete without a visit to the delightful Warrnambool Botanic Gardens." - Warrnambool Botanic Gardens.

  • The Hairy Goat Tapas and Cocktail Bar

    Adresse:
    69 Liebig St, Warrnambool VIC 3280 .

"There’s a taxidermy goat’s head hanging proudly from the wall at The Hairy Goat. As for how it got there, owner Jade Kelson says he and some mates were throwing around ideas for what they should call his then unopened bar. The beer-soaked suggestions were so outrageous, Kelson joked he’d sooner call his new venue The Hairy Goat. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Kelson gets the last laugh though, because his crowd-pleasing boozer has been going strong for the better part of five years. It’s loosely-inspired by the casual dining he loved while living and working in Europe. That means, lots of small share plates paired with good booze.

As you’d expect from any good tapas bar, The Goat’s menu has Spanish flair in spades. Start with jamon, pamplona and olives, or white anchovies served with sourdough kissed by the grill. Cop a couple Spanish-style meatballs, or local prawns and chorizo drenched in garlic butter. To share, go for the proper Paella or a char-grilled rib eye steak with a choice of sides.

The chesterfields, reams of timber, and maroon banquettes vaguely recall an old-fashioned whisky den (it’s just as well there’s loads of the stuff). But the long list of martinis and Tiki drinks might take you somewhere else entirely." - Broadsheet.com.au
